Kotsyfos Gorge

The Kotsifou gorge is one of the many gorges of the prefecture of Rethymnon, a few kilometers north of the village of Sellia that starts from the village of Kanevos and ends at Plakias.

With a total length of 1,800 meters and some almost vertical sides that reach a height of 600 meters, the Kotsifou (or Kotsifou) gorge at its starting point is very narrow with a width of about 10 meters, which gradually increases.

Inside the gorge where the scenery is enchanting with high, vertical, imposing rocks and next to the asphalt that crosses the upper part of the gorge, there is the small church of Agios Nikolaos, built inside a rocky hollow.

Starting from the village of Kanevos, the visitor entering the riverbed and after about 1 hour of walking, ends up at the bridge that connects Sellia with Myrthio. During the route, there are large boulders that block the path, while after a while, the Kotsifou gorge joins the Butsina fall.

In winter, an impressive 20-meter waterfall forms there, while in summer the river bed is dry.

At the location where the bridge leading to Sellia is located, the Kotsifos gorge gradually turns into a large valley and when the visitor takes the dirt road that leads back, against the flow of the canyon, he meets the springs of Kotsifos where a small lake is formed. The surrounding villages draw water from there, while from here on, the river, which has water throughout the year, ends at one of the beaches of Plakias.
