The legends about Lake Kournas in Crete

Lake Kournas in Crete has several legends that have accompanied it for many years. No one can resist the beauty of the lake and this is because according to the most famous legend, perhaps hidden below is a fairy with long blond hair, which when it emerges to the surface and the sunlight falls on them, they look like gold. The legend speaks of a beautiful girl who many years ago lived in a village with her father right in the area where the lake is located. She was so beautiful, she looked almost fake. One day, while going to their field, they sat down to rest for a while.

The girl began to comb her hair that shone like gold and "blurred" her father who began to approach her with sly dispositions. The frightened daughter managed to shout "Voula and Voulolimna, and I am a ghost in the lake!". Then the area immediately sank in the water, creating Lake Kournas. Locals say many have seen the fairy comb her hair in the moonlight, sitting on a rock in the middle of the lake.

Others say that anyone who believes in the legend can see her at night, slipping in the water and bathing her blond hair, flooding the lake with light.

There are other myths that accompany the unique natural lake with fresh water in Crete. Its strange color, light turquoise all around and very dark circular from one point and inside, was the reason for creating the myth that the lake has no bottom, it is a scam.

A lesser known version of the creation of the lake says that once the god, angry with the dishonest locals, sank the area and drowned everyone, except the priest daughter who became the fairy of the rock.
