Fortezza

to the north of the city of Rethymnon rises the Venetian fortress known as Fortezza, A trademark of Rethymnon, Fortezza is the city's most important monument. Built in the late 16th century. to enhance the city's defense
it dominates the Paleokastro hill and complements the image of Rethymnon's unparalleled charm to visitors. The tour of the castle is at the same time a tour of time, a journey in the Venetian era.
One enters Fortezza from the monumental
eastern (central) gate and through a gallery is inside to see a fairytale setting. Basements with loopholes, gun barrels and water tanks, food storage depots, ideally restored, predispose to Fortezza's warlike
character and testify to the contemplated organization of the site. The view of the Venetian harbor and the city of Rethymnon is amazing on the bastion of Agios Nikolaos
