Spili village - Rethymno
Spili is a
mountainous, traditional village located 30 km SE of Rethymnon city. It was the
capital of the municipality of Agios Vasilios in the prefecture of Rethymnon,
while it used to be the capital of the homonymous province.
It is the seat of
the Holy Metropolis of Lambi, Sivritos and Sfakia and of the Association of
Scientists of the Municipality of Lambi. Spili is built amphitheatrically in
the center of the prefecture on a western slope of mountain Kedros, which is a
southwest extension of Psiloritis, at an altitude of 430 m, which supplies its
springs with running waters. In the village square there are tall centuries-old
plane trees and a fountain with 25 lion-headed taps, from whose mouths water
flows
