Spili history
It is said
that the name Spili was taken from the many caves located in the area and
mainly from the cave located in the northwestern part of the village, in the
area of Peristere. It is even mentioned that in this cave
there was the miraculous icon of Virgin Mary painted on a rock, which
unfortunately is not saved today. The village is known by this name from the
Venetian period, when it was two separate settlements (Panochori-Perachori).
Certainly,
this is evidenced by churches with 14th century Byzantine frescoes located on
the outskirts of the village.
On a hill
south of the village in 1790, Yakoumis Tsouderos beheaded two Turkish generals who,
without being invited to a wedding ceremony, behaved in an ugly way. In June
1821, with the onset of the revolution, a battle was fought with the Turks, who
were exterminated by the cavalry rebels. The participation of the villagers in
the revolution of 1866 was also significant.
The
Spilians took part and gave their lives to all the struggles of the nation
(Balkan wars - Asia Minor - Albanian front). During the German occupation, the
participation of peasants in the war was high. However, the village was not destroyed
by the invaders because, according to earlier reports, it was guarded by a
senior German officer who, unaware of his position, had been hospitalized by
villagers for the plane crash.
