Plakias history
Plakias is
a seaside tourist settlement in Rethymno in southern Crete.
The area
has been inhabited since antiquity. Plakias' place is considered by some to be
the ancient city of Lamon or the ancient city of Phoenician Lambia].
Roman
artifacts have been found in Plakias, and a necropolis of 5 acres has been
found at the site of Zoodochos Pigi, but the slabs have been removed from the
graves. Scattered plates have been found on the slope and according to one
theory, the large number of plates gave the name Plakias to the area. According
to another theory, the name derives from the fact that the village was built on
a large slab.
The
settlement is new, as it was created around 1830 or early 20th century by
fishermen from Sellia Rethymnon who settled in the area. In the 1960s Plakias
beach was a popular destination for hippies. In the 1970s, Plakias witnessed
great tourism development. . Hotels, cafes, taverns, rooms to let, shops,
organized beaches and a post office are available in Plakias today. It is also
a popular destination for water sports enthusiasts.
