Gazi Deli Hussein Pasha Mosque or Neraze
Originally
it was the temple dedicated to the Virgin of Santa Clara
"SantaMaria". The church is rectangular in shape and housed in three
small domes, which replaced the tiled roof of the Venetian church. The door of
the building is one of the most impressive in Rethymnon. The adjacent chapel
was dedicated to the Body of Christ. The church was converted into a mosque in
1657 and its chapel into an Ottoman seminary. In 1890 a large minaret with two
balconies was added by engineer George Daskalakis and is the tallest in
Rethymnon. Today, the Neraze Mosque hosts the City Conservatory.
