Fortezza - Rethymno history
Fortezza is a fortress in Rethymnon built by the Venetians in 1573. In 1538 Haier Ant Din, admiral of the Ottoman fleet and a coast guardian of Algeria (Barbaria), known to many and as Barbarosa attacked the island. The Venetians feared and decided to fortify their conquest. They built a 1,307-meter-long wall around the city that is almost destroyed today, leaving the side exposed to the sea. In a further attempt the Turkish pirate Olut Ali in 1562 easily conquered the city.
The Venetians expelled him and found their mistake.
