Archaeological Museum Rethymnon

The Rethymnon Archaeological Museum is temporarily housed in the St. Francis Basilica in the center of the old town of Rethymnon.

From 1991 to 2015 it was housed in the Fortezza fortress, in a pentagonal fort-building constructed by the Ottomans to protect the entrance to the castle and later used as a prison.

Its exhibits come from various excavations in the prefecture and represent all periods, from the Neolithic period to the years of Roman rule. Among the most important exhibits of the Museum are the shrine depicting a hunting scene, the Minoan

goddess figurine, the marble statue of Aphrodite, the violin-shaped marble figurine from the Geranium cave, an earthenware sepulcher and other valuable findings.
